Introduction

Aloha,

My name is Kemomi Kaʻapana.  I live in Hilo on the Big Island.  I have 3 children, all boys: a brand new baby boy that will be 2 months-old tomorrow, a 10 year-old and my oldest will be turning 14 in less than a month:) I am currently working full-time as a TA with Kamehameha Preschools in Keaukaha.  I work with mixed-ages of 3, 4 and 5 year-olds.  My experience in working with instruction and assessment, with a bit of background:  Our program is cultural-based and our assessment tools are constantly changing.  As for children instruction and assessment, we use a work sampling program, WSO, to assess and plan for instruction.  We, ourselves, also have assessment tools that allow us for growth.  On top of being a full-time mom(sort of single-parenting) and taking my older boys to their sports after school 7 days a week, I have another class, besides this one, that Iʻm taking online because of my hectic schedule. After this semester, I have my practicum and will finally be able to graduate with my BA in social science with a concentration in early childhood education.  That was a super long journey for me, but Iʻll be excited when I finish this chapter in my life and can move on with the next!   Looking forward to moving forward with you all this semester and may we all get through this together, learning and growing with one another:)

Mahalo,

Kemomi

  1. Hello there Kumu Kemomi,

Its good to see you in class again :) I think we will have similar understanding to share as far as assessment and collection as we are both using WSO and have the same expectations of our use wit it. The joys and stresses of it are real. Please share my love with your mom and the rest of the Keaukaha Kru...the OGs anyway, I am sure there are new faces :) Lets tackle this class girl we got it!!

  2. Aloha Kemomi,

Hello from the Big Island, though on the Kona side. And congratulations on your newest addition to your family. It does sound like you have your hands full, but sometimes that helps us stay on track even more, because we know what the stakes are. Please let me know if I can support you in this journey at all, especially since I live on island.

We'll be talking about Work Sampling next week, along with TS Gold. I hope you'll share your experiences with that system, as well as the other forms of assessment you guys use at Kamehameha Schools. I look forward to hearing your thoughts as we continue, and again, welcome!

    1. Aloha Brooke,

Thank you! And I will. I did share a bit of my feelings on WSO on Mikalaʻs blog, as we are both familiar with it, although no fans:/ But I guess it has itʻs good and bad as everything else does. It works and yet it doesnʻt. Looking forward to talking more about it with others:)

  3. Aloha e Brooke!!

It seems as though there are several of us in this class from KS, and all too familiar with WSO. I look forward to our future discussions as we seem to have a lot in common like working full time, balancing a family and also the relief of seeing the "light at the end of the tunnel". This is my last semester after many years of taking a couple classes at a time just to keep my head above water. Home stretch!!
